Transitioning from a consistent dual-income household to one consistent and one gig-based income has presented some challenges for us, but its allowed us to explore new opportunities to save money.

Quality internet is a necessity for us; I work from home 3 days a week and my husband does a majority of his work from his laptop. I also love television. I don't mind Netflix and other services, but I love live television.I didn't want to lose that if I didn't have to, so it was important to find a plan that had both High-Speed Internet and TV.

We've had Verizon for 6 years and haven't had any complaints. When our most recent contract expired, our bill jumped up $30/mo. I called for a discount and received $10 off of our monthly bill. Another month passed and I began comparing other plans and providers. Low and behold, I found a better deal through Comcast.

When I called Verizon and shared Comcast's better pricing, they wouldn't match it or give any additional discounts besides the $10 I received the month prior. Comcast not only had a lower monthly cost, but they also waived installation fees and made it easy for us to use our own modem. They also offered a $100 gift card on top of it all. So we now have Comcast!

We now own our modem and router. The $100 gift card offset most of the cost so we only paid about $25 out of pocket for the remaining amount. Win!

TV package is Standard Definition versus the HD we had with Verizon. To overcome this, we use the Xfinity app on our Roku to view HD channels.

Fewer channels but most are not missed. No more Nick Jr and Disney Jr, but we gained FX, TLC, and SyFy. Not having the kids' channels is helping us keep the TV off in the morning and limited in the evening - so its actually a win!

No more live TV in our bedroom. It's now a Netflix and HBO only screen.

We can record shows now! Verizon wanted to charge us an additional $10 for this ability so we never used it, but the Xfinity app on the Roku lets us record for free. Win!

.. I bought another pair of Tieks.

Watch me as I attempt to justify this purchase to myself in terms of money and storage space:

I have a pair of leopard ballet flats that I love to wear but they make my back ache after a few hours. I hadn't worn them in over a year; I loved the way they looked and hated the way they made my body feel. It didn't make sense to keep them, regardless of how pretty they were.

I knew my best option for comfort would be Tieks. Would you like to guess the MSRP of the Leopard Tieks? $265 - as much as my Moonstruck and Lovestruck Tieks (which I still adore and wear several times a week.)

I knew I couldn't swing another $265 on our limited budget. I also didn't want to add another pair to my shoe storage, even though they were replacing my uncomfortable pair. This situation called for my old friend: eBay. I decided to sell my Biscotti patents on eBay for $85 (originally
purchased for $53). I rarely wore them and I couldn't justify keeping something I didn't use. The profit from those shoes added to my original budget meant I could focus on finding the perfect used pair. After weeks of searching, I found one with soles in great condition but needed a little love on the outside.

This pair was $135 with free shipping. In the few days it took to arrive to my home, I researched and planned the steps of their rehab. I spent an additional $5 on a container of Tarrago and $10 on Blackrock Leather N Rich, both from Amazon. I scoured Facebook groups and YouTube for different ways to restore and protect the shoes. In the end, I opted for a very simple rehab so they still show some wear while still looking gorgeous.

Instead of leather paint, I used the Tarrago shoe cream to thinly paint the black spots. Most people opt for the paint so they can look new. I opted for the cream so it can still show its age. After the spots dried, I went over the shoe with Blackrock. I used a clean cloth and added a thin layer all over the shoe, then buffed. Here's the starting with the finished product:

I'm planning on re-conditioning all my Tieks in the coming weeks. I still adore the comfort and simplicity of these shoes. The pricing is still my only complaint but eBay makes it more realistic to own and love this exclusive brand. Having an elegant and comfortable shoe also adds to my minimalist approach to 2019.
While many apply Marie Kondo’s method of Konmari to their
homes, it's just as important to tidy up one’s workspace. Whether it’s a
corner office, cubicle, or kitchen table, your workspace can see the benefit of
Komari.

Konmari emphasizes “Joy” as the catalyst for decluttering. Although
you may not necessarily find joy in keeping tax documents or office supplies,
instead focus on what will bring the most peace and benefit for your worklife,
therefore sparking joy in your overall satisfaction. This post will focus on both Paper and Sentimental items in your workspace.

Paper

Your paper needs vary greatly depending on your occupation. Generally
speaking, many documents and papers can be digitized and added to a cloud for
easier access from multiple devices. The first step is to review the paper
items around your desk and in your drawers. Next, categorize them into groups
that make sense to your needs. For example, your desk drawer may have a pile of
business cards, receipts, brochures, menus, conference agendas, etc. Now
distinguish those items into three categories: Keep, Digitize, Discard. Items
like business cards and receipts can be scanned and uploaded to your local
network or to a cloud so you can access them from multiple devices. Items like
menus and conference agendas are likely not worth storing long-term. Remaining
items should have a specific destination like an accordion file folder or filing
cabinet so they do not remain on your desk or loose in a drawer.

Sentimental

This category is the most difficult for me because I love
photos and figurines that remind me of people or events in my life. Although it
looks cluttered from those walking by, working in a colorful environment brings
me joy. Through this process I have learned to strike a balance between
colorful joy and clutter. Rather than having 12 figurines in a line by my
monitor, I now have 3 of my most important and sentimental objects placed
strategically throughout the room. Rather than a wall full of photos and thank
you cards, I have placed most of them in a nice box and a few framed photos and
a piece of art on my window sill. My desk looks more organized and I feel more
at peace.
You know how in September I said I didn't need more than two pairs of Tieks?

In November I bought another pair.

And then in December I bought another pair.

Wha happened?

Well, I worked Election Day as a Poll Official and earned a paycheck enough to buy something nice for myself. I was debating between a pair of Tieks or a new purse - I chose happy shoes. Yellow is my favorite color and they bring me so much joy every time I look down. They are ridiculous and I love them. It's a different type of leather than the Biscotti patent and Lovestruck I had and I was worried they would scratch easily. I wore them and my Lovestrucks every day on a Disney Cruise and they still look great - and my feet never hurt.

Tieks on a plane (with no show socks showing.)

Although the outside looked great, a string had come lose that connected the inside sole. I sent the yellow pair back to Tieks in December for a free rehab. 4 days later, I had my shoes back and a new Tieks flower. All for free.

I loved my Mustard Tieks, but they were difficult to justify wearing them to a conference or dressy occasion. I loved the way my Lovestruck Tieks can be worn casually or dressed up. And wouldn't you know that in December, Tieks introduced a new limited edition shoe: Moonstruck. I used my Christmas bonus and bought them for myself. They are my new favorite shoe. They fit exactly like the Lovestruck and are so freaking pretty!

My Lovestrucks have been worn 3-4 times a week for the past 3 months and they still look fantastic. Here they are side by side for comparison:

Sister shoes: Moonstruck (new) and Lovestruck (worn 3x a week for 3 months)

Lovestruck and Moonstruck

And I'm for real done buying Tieks. The only way I'd get a new pair is if I sold a pair I currently have.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152823282483000754.post-9407383593852516582017-09-12T12:38:00.003-04:002017-09-14T10:02:20.717-04:00Tieks - they're just shoes.

About a month ago, I asked a friend of mine what brand of shoe I should get for conferences. I travel to 3-4 conferences a year and have to be on my feet for 2-3 days straight. My shoe choices were killing me. She recommended Tieks. As soon as she typed the word, all of the ads in my browser began showing beautiful and bright leather ballet flats.

I started down the rabbit hole.

What are Tieks?

Tieks are Italian leather ballet flats from a designer named Gavrieli. They are hand made with high quality Italian leather and have a unique sole that allow them to easily fold in half for flexibility and ease of storage/transport. (Learn more here). They're ideal for people who have to walk to work in professional garb, like DC or NYC. Tieks are very popular for people that work on their feet all day, like teachers and those in service industries. You may also see them on the feet of nearly every travel blogger with a healthy Instagram following.

Unfortunately, the high price tag keeps this shoe out of many working people's closets. The basic style can cost as high as $175 per pair, with very fancy styles all the way up to $375 per pair. Oprah loves them and celebrities can sometimes be seen wearing them when they're not on the red carpet.

Where can I buy them?

They're only available at Tieks.com and very few brick and mortar retailers, usually just in major cities. These limited channels keep their prices high and the resale market very hot.

So naturally, I scoured eBay for a pair in my size that were under $100 - I won a (very) used (and damaged) pair of Biscotti Patents for $53!

They had a large slit in the side and scuffs on the edges. I joined a FB group and asked the hive mind how I could repair these coveted shoes - they told me Dr. Scholl's moleskin and Shoe Goo should do the trick. It did.

I fixed them, put them on, and felt richer and better than everyone around me. And then my heel really started hurting. I added more moleskin to the back heel to make it stand up a bit more and that seemed to help. Even though my feet didn't feel like they were covered in soft puppies and walking on rainbows, I already wanted more.

I convinced myself I needed a new pair so I could be the shoe's one true foot. I studied the colors and styles, determined my total cost per wear based on my wardrobe, and chose the prettiest color: Lovestruck.

Although it looks like glitter, they are, "crafted from soft, Italian leather that is pressed with a delicate foil, then tumbled to give the leather a crackled, antiqued appearance. The leather is unique in that it has a subtle, iridescent pattern which gives the leather an uncommonly brilliant shine with a unique pattern." So that means they're awesome and better than every other shoe you've ever owned.

Having spent hours of my life researching and following FB groups, I knew these beauties would need preparation before going out into the wild. I bought Frye's leather conditioner and Angelus neutral leather acrylic paint. I was ready.

I got my coveted Tieks blue box, Frye's conditioner, and Angelus paint all on the same day. It was surely meant to be! I removed the shoes without even taking photos of the unboxing, which is a major Tieks faux paux. I put them on my feet and stood up. They felt exactly like split sole ballet shoes. Again, I wasn't covered in puppies and walking on rainbows, but they felt very nice and fancy.

I prepped an area at the kitchen table and started to paint with the Angelus. Then I conditioned with Frye's. THEY WERE SO PRETTY. I decided to do another coat to make sure my precious would remain pretty. Paint. Condition. I added moleskin to the toebox to prevent the dreaded "toe bump." (See this helpful video on how to do it.) Now they were ready for the wild.

I chose to unveil them on a trip to the salon in a nearby uppity town - surely someone would see how special I was to have owned a pair of elite shoes. No one cared. But I took several shoe selfies (shofies?) in various lighting and posted them to the FB group anyway. There was much rejoicing.

After my grey hair disappeared, my shoes took me to my best friend's house for a cookout. And guess what - SHE NOTICED THE SHOES! Validation.

I've now worn them nearly 10 times in 2 weeks and they still feel great. I wear the pre-owned pair as well. In total, I spent $310 on two pairs of Tieks. (When you factor in the additional costs of preserving them, it's $350.)

The pros?

They fold in half easily, the style fits my feet well, ships quickly, available in many beautiful colors, and they even come with a tote and small black pouch if you need to shove them into your purse. I also love their customer service. And how they make you feel like you're better than everyone around you.

The cons?

The cost.

Would you buy another new pair?

No. The price point is just too damn high. They feel wonderful, I'm glad I have what I have, but there's no freaking way I can justify getting another pair for the foreseeable future. If I had a job that required more time on my feet, then I would consider getting more pairs. (I can see why teachers love them.) But I can't personally justify spending that much on a pair of shoes when I sit at a desk for a majority of the day. Two pairs is all I need for travel and conferences.

Would you buy another used pair?

If I can find another pair under $75 in a color I wanted prior to seeing the listing, then maybe.

For now, two pairs is just enough.
10 days after my dad died, we all joined my in-laws for Christmas. It was very bittersweet with moments of joy, laughter, and painful realizations.

My in-laws love games. One of the games we played was a version of White Elephant/Dirty Santa but just for the girls. My sister-in-law purchased and wrapped 6 gifts, placed them in the middle of the room, then gave us each a number at random. We went one by one either selecting a present to open or we could use our turn to steal something that had already been opened. On the third steal, the item could no longer be stolen.

We opened the packages one by one and saw thick, velvety cowl scarves or luscious gloves. On my turn, I decided to steal an already stolen scarf because of its beautiful color. More opening and steals occurred, and to my dismay, someone decided to steal the scarf I had. I tried to playfully run away and hide it so perhaps give a hint that I didn't want it stolen. She stole it anyway. I ended up with a black velvet scarf - the darkest fabric one can wear. (Puppeteers often use it so they can disappear in the background of live performances or recordings rather than use a green screen. You could even say there's none more black.) I had the chance to steal someone else's but I was so upset and sad that I decided to keep it so that no one else would feel the disappointment of having their sought after item stolen. I later went into the bathroom and cried.

Of all the colors in the world, I had the one for disappearing. I ended up giving it away.

A few weeks later, the person that stole the beautiful scarf from me ended up mailing it back with a note that said, "GOTCHA!"

I've been too sad and embarrassed to ever actually wear it. It's still hanging in my closet.

(FYI - Svaha did not compensate me for this post, nor did they ask me to express my affection and appreciation for their company. I just really dig their stuff.)

As a mother of two girls, I try my best to keep their outfits comfortable, durable, and modest. Dresses with leggings are like our "one ring to rule them all" ensemble solution because they can wear it for several years, unlike a shirt that can become too short after a growth spurt.

Dressing my eldest daughter has been especially tough. She is only 5 years old but her height puts her into clothes made for 7-8 year olds. If you've been to Target or Kohl's in the past 3 years, clothing for 8 year olds look suspiciously like what I wore as a teenager in the late 90's - short, tight, and covered in glitter. We sometimes find solid leggings we can use under dresses but their other items gave us little wiggle room. I found I had to shop at either boutique stores for pricy dresses made from better materials or thrift stores for discarded gems.

Then, I found it: Svaha! This company was founded by two working moms that met while at ThinkGeek (another favorite e-retailer of ours.) They found that there was a need for kids clothing that incorporated STEAM concepts as well as a variety of colors for both boys and girls. Their dresses often feature pockets (YAY!) and their adult dresses come in a variety of cuts for a variety of body types. Thanks to their fantastic flash sales, we now have over 30 pieces from their website.

We've even been featured on their Instagram page because I can't contain my joy and had to tell them how much we love their dresses:
My dad died 2 months ago. My friend Josh died 2 weeks ago and his funeral is on Saturday.

Stress is making me sick.

I've been fighting to keep the house organized, keep my appointments up to date, keep my kids out of trouble, keep my marriage a priority, and keep my mom company - which means my health and friendships keep getting put on the back burner.

I'm currently fighting a sudden onslaught of deep chest congestion and pressure - so much so that I thought I was having heart issues. I had bad chills at 4:00 a.m. and a fever this morning. But still, I couldn't be still - I emptied the dish washer, helped get the girls ready for school, sold our old car, and worked from home so I wouldn't disappoint anyone.

I need a day where I am not mom, daughter, wife, friend, or employee.

I mourned and celebrated Josh's life by watching (read: weeping) RENT.
Heart disease is the #1 killer of women.
Heart disease is also the #1 killer of my family members.

We have a running joke in my family that if you don't die in your 50's of a heart attack, you'll live to your 80's. To our knowledge, no one in our family has had cancer of any kind. But a bad heart? Yup, got that.

Knowing this, my parents were meticulous about their health. They both ate well, my dad would take walks every day, my mom does Yoga and works out multiple times a week, and they always saw their doctor for regular check-ups. My dad died suddenly of a massive heart attack that killed him in a moment. His doctor was just as shocked as we were.

"So if a heart attack can kill me any time, why even bother taking care of my health?"

Good question, self.

My dad probably lived longer because he took care of himself. He still died too soon but he likely would have died sooner had he not eaten well and exercised.

So knowing that my dad, my dad's dad, my grandma's sister, my grandma's brother, my grandpa's brother, and my grandpa's dad all had fatal heart attacks, I know I need to get my health in check.
He was 63 years old.

Around 4:00 p.m. on that Thursday, I got a call from my mom. I was on a conference call so she left a voicemail. She said, "Dad had a heart attack. Call me. I'm going to George Washington Hospital." I called her back, said I'll drive, then picked her up and headed to DC. We listened to Christmas music the whole way.

An hour later, we parked in a garage and walked across the street in the freezing wind. We went to the Emergency Department, checked in, and waited. A nurse came out to us and asked us to wait in the chapel so the doctor could come speak to us. While there, we met with one of dad's co-workers that was there when it happened. I texted Jonathan (my husband) and Lisa (my brother's wife) and let them know we were being taken to a separate room for someone to talk to us. We knew what it meant.

The doctor came in and sat down. I grabbed my mom's hand. He spoke. "My name is _____. I'm one of the doctors that worked on your husband. We worked on him for 90 minutes. Unfortunately, we could not revive him." I think that's what he said. I don't remember. I just remember the sound and color escaping from the room.

We went to see my dad's body. I hugged him. We went back out to the waiting room.

My brother was driving down to the hospital to be with all of us. I called Lisa to tell her and asked if I should tell Rich, and she said that we should wait to tell him in person. I called Jonathan and wept in the empty corner of the waiting room. He wept with me. I called my Uncle to tell him. I texted close friends because I couldn't get any more words out.

I went back to his room to collect his things and they had already cleaned out the room and were about to take him to the morgue. I asked them to stop so we could give my brother a chance to say goodbye. I went to security to get his things. I carried back 2 very full bags that contained his torn down coat, his torn suit jacket, shoes, belt, socks, torn shirt, keys, wallet, portfolio, wedding ring, and his gold Casio watch. I brought them all out to the waiting room and kept them slightly out of my mom's view as she continued making phone calls.

"This is so weird" was the only phrase I could continue muttering to my mom as we made phone calls.

Rich came. Mom told him. He went into a corner. I slowly approached him and asked if he wanted to see dad. I guided him to the back and showed him where he was.

I went to the nurse's station to ask if there were any other steps we needed to take at this time. She wrote down information to give to my mom. We went back to the lobby where mom was still making calls. I updated Facebook because I was tired of answering individual texts and telling the same information over and over again.

We walked out of George Washington hospital with my dad's clothes and items and loaded them into my car and my brother drove my mom home. I listened to the Hamilton Mixtape on my way home. I skipped "Quiet Uptown".
Sorry, y'all.

Susie turned 7 months.

And then she turned 8 months.

And she just keeps growing!

She doesn't crawl - she pulls her self across the room with her mouth agape like a puppy toward a brand new tennis ball.

She doesn't fully laugh - she cackles and smiles with all 6 teeth.

She loves life. She loves Joanna. She loves music. She is awesome. We love her.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152823282483000754.post-4108400994162493682014-06-03T16:09:00.000-04:002017-01-19T22:53:51.705-05:00Six MonthsSusie woosie. My little lamb. My smiley kumquat. My blubbering, drooling, ball of sunshine. Six months ago we met you. A few months ago I was exhausted from you. Now, I'm so thankful for time. Some moms wish that time would pass more slowly - I was the opposite for these six months!

Now that I'm more rested, I can finally fully enjoy you! It's not your fault that you wanted to be held and comforted constantly. You're a woman that knows what she wants and will do what it takes to get it. I admire that quality in women - but not in babies. You're now at an age where you interact and give smiles back. I live for those moments. Thank you for your infectious smile that cures any ailment.

SueLou can roll (in one direction), sit up for a few moments, and crawl with her arms (SO scary!). She has two teeth and a big voice in her 19 pound body.

And now for adorable pictures on our couch!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152823282483000754.post-75999590892302333922014-05-18T22:55:00.000-04:002017-01-19T22:53:51.722-05:00Show Me The BellyIt's time for photos of my belly.

I knew motherhood would leave me with some sort of medal, whether it be stretch marks, a pooch, or both. Never did I expect to look as if I were smuggling dinosaur eggs. I defied gravity with my basketball belly. My children tipped scales but didn't leave a stretch mark. But the lack of marks doesn't mean I escaped unscathed.

I have a severe "Mother's Apron". Basically, I have a large fold of skin dangling over my C-section incision. Rather than hide it from you lovely people, I wanted to show you what my motherhood scars look like. I have two beautiful kids. I'm in the best shape of my life. I can bench press an Olsen twin without breaking a sweat. My body doesn't look like how I feel about myself - but that's what clothes are for.

Pregnant with Susan at 38 weeks

One Year Post-Joanna at 175lbs, relaxing versus sucking in.

Susie's birth day | 2 weeks postpartum with a belly band.

January 2014 at apx 185lbs | May 2014 at apx 178lbs

5 months postpartum - relaxed versus sucking in

I recently cut out about 70% of my carbs, gave up soda, and eat way more fruit and vegetables - I've lost 5 pounds in 2 weeks! The biggest difference I saw was my bloating. The sag is saggier and I can zip into a size 12 now instead of a 14. My waist can still accommodate a size 8 while the sag requires more fabric. (If only hoop skirts were still in fashion!) For now, I will continue to strengthen my core, minimize the fat, and get my sag to its "skin-iest" so I can hopefully have it removed surgically. Spanx will only compress it so much without it restricting my breathing or ability to sit down. At the end of the day, Flowy tops are my friend. Maternity pants are a necessity. Skin is just skin.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152823282483000754.post-48187365254740000292014-04-29T23:20:00.000-04:002017-01-19T22:53:51.710-05:00Big Update - March / AprilIt's good to be back.

Susie has outgrown her constant need for comfort - HALLELUJAH! She started rolling last month and continues to develop ahead of schedule. At her four month appointment, I had to check the "no" box for the question "Does she roll from belly to back." During the appointment, she nearly rolled off the table from back to belly. The doctor looked at her and said "Wow, that happens at 6 months." Apparently my child is able to flip belly to back but just chooses not to, she'd rather roll back to belly and stick her head up and smile. What a stinker. She is a belly sleeper just like her big sister.

Now at 5 months, she found her thumb! We lay her down on her side so she can choose to get on her back and wiggle around or she can get on her tummy and sleep. Susie loves music, especially Frozen. She'll be a soprano for sure. Susie can mimic pitch really well for a baby, better than Joanna did. She loves when we clap her feet together and can go from 0 to smile in milliseconds. Her giggles are stupendous.

And she likes being worn! YAY! I can wear her in my Boba and ring sling now! We skipped the Moby stage completely.

And did I mention I'm weaning? Instead of nursing and supplementing 10% of the time, I'm now using formula and nursing about 15% of the time. It has been so wonderful to give up nursing! My hormones have stabilized, I'm not tired all of the time, and my back and neck pain have been alleviated a bit by the literal weight that was lifted off of my shoulders. I'm glad I nursed and I'm even more glad I'm done. I only nurse in the mornings at this point.

Joanna has been the perfect older sister. She loves to help, she mimics us by using her dolls and stuffed animals, she is eager to hug and kiss Susie, and she loves making her smile. It's so freaking cute! We're trying our best to split our attention as evenly as possible. Some days I'm lucky when they nap at opposite times so I can have one on one time with them. Most days I'm just trying to survive until Jonathan gets home.

We spent Easter with Jonathan's family in Fredericksburg. Joanna had the time of her life running around her aunt and uncle's back yard searching for Easter eggs with her "cousins". (The photo to the left is from Easter). We also visited a farm near our house a few weeks ago. It was the first time Joey was able to see a horse, chickens, pigs, turkeys, and peacocks in person! It was like seeing a child at Disney world and the cow was Princess Anna.

By the way, Frozen is played at least once a day in our home.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152823282483000754.post-21227681135806814652014-04-17T15:16:00.000-04:002017-01-19T22:53:51.702-05:00New Job!It is with deepest joy and greatest pleasure that I announce that I was offered a job in Education Administration in my dream county, with a salary that will cover childcare AND enough to move into our dream county, I'll have my own office, and I will finally have a place to wear all of my gorgeous jewelry every day. I will be a Registrar again! YAY! I officially start July 1st (the current Registrar is finishing out the school year.) I'm not naming where it is because this is the internet, and everything on the internet is searchable.

Remember how I searched for a job for nearly 18 months? Applying to over 100 jobs? Last week, I received an email from the librarian at the school saying that she found my resume on Indeed - she saw I attended and worked at Liberty University as a Registrar. She told me about the opening, said that she was also an alumni of Liberty, and asked if I would be interested in applying for the position. Shocked, I replied within minutes and thanked her for finding me! I altered my cover letter, spruced up my resume, and dug up my references. Within 12 hours, I had an interview scheduled for the following week. The interview consisted of 2 panels - one was administrative, the other was with principals. 2 days later, I was offered the job! Holy crap. HOLY CRAP.

As soon as the Headmaster called, I immediately felt 20 pounds lighter and began to cry. Working is a privilege. I now have a job where I can apply my education, experience, and passion. AND I'll make enough so my children can attend a great daycare and have a great house to call their home. I'm overjoyed, y'all. Like, seriously overjoyed.

I'll be using these next months to train part-time. We're also using that time to find the perfect childcare that fits both of our daughter's needs. There are hundreds of places to choose from in Northern Virginia and I'm really thankful for the variety we have.

It feels really great to be a working mother again. I'm going to be happier, my children are going to have the opportunity to be more active, and everyone will be able to meet and play with new people.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152823282483000754.post-14293884348273485732014-03-24T13:49:00.000-04:002017-01-19T22:53:51.698-05:00AttachedSusie loves me. I think I'm her favorite thing in the world. I am food, I am music, I am swing set, I am diaper changing machine, I am tickler; I am everything to her. And its exhausting.

Little time for dates, shopping, eating, or regular hygiene.

Here is Jonathan holding Susie so I could eat when we went to Foster's. He was able to get her to sleep and still finish his fries. He is superhuman.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152823282483000754.post-85325412400926188462014-03-12T19:51:00.000-04:002017-01-19T22:53:51.729-05:00TeethingTeething, you art a heartless guttersnipe.

Susie is a horrible drooling mess. She's 3.5 months old and can barely hold up her head, let alone put a teething toy in her mouth to soothe the pain. When she's at her screeching worst, she doesn't even want to nurse. All I can do is rock her and sing "Over (and over and over) the Rainbow." The moment I stop is the moment she starts screaming again.

I know Susie won't remember the pain, but I feel bad that Joanna is being so impacted by it all. Susie shrieks, I comfort her, and Joanna looks at me then picks up one of her dolls and tries to console it. She is having a hard time understanding why Susan is allowed to cry and complain but she can't. Joey has a great deal of empathy, too so she starts crying and seeking comfort. It's not in a "give me attention now!" kind of way - I can tell she is sincerely sad for her sister's pain.

So far we're addressing Susie's teeth with an amber teething necklace on her ankle (because she doesn't have the neck control to wear it as a necklace), orajel, and some pain reliever. I gave up caffeine for now (OY!) so she can hopefully get to sleep more easily. She's too large and my torso is too small to baby wear her like an infant, and she's too young for me to wear her like a 9 month old (even though she's the size of one). Bigger is not always better.

She's crying again. Time to put my ruby slippers back on.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152823282483000754.post-57424405545429939082014-03-01T20:32:00.000-05:002017-01-19T22:53:51.713-05:003 Months OldI'm getting very bad at updates. Life is insane. My business is booming and my house is a hurricane. I'm keeping up with quick updates to Facebook and Instagram but it takes a small army to update my blog. We were going to do photos in the chair again like we did for Joey, but the couch has much better lighting. Joanna sometimes likes participating, too.

Susie is screaming less, eating more, and starting to smile. My little one is getting into 9 month clothes. She'll soon catch up to her cousins that were also born in 2013. (My gigantic monster children will starting giving them handmedowns.)

Maybe with all of this snow, I can get more done? Or I'll go more insane? Or both?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152823282483000754.post-45538937387420429362014-02-25T20:15:00.000-05:002017-01-19T22:53:51.708-05:00I Love/Hate NursingNursing is difficult, beneficial, rewarding, and exhausting. I was told all of these things in advance and I still felt blindsided.

The first weeks are brutal as you and the milk monster try to get into a rhythm of timing and duration. Each mother and each child is different so its hard to set a schedule that will work for all babies. In the midst of mastitis and kidney infections, it was an annoying chore to feed my child from my body. Thank God for formula.

On a good day: I nurse Susan on both sides right before bed, one side right after waking, then pump the other side. I'm usually able to nurse her throughout the day while on the couch or chair while Joanna reads, colors, or dictates what is happening on Sid the Science Kid. When I need to feed Susie more quickly, I'll use the milk I pumped earlier. When Joanna sleeps, Susan nurses for 30-40 minutes on each side. By the time she finishes, I have 20-30 minutes of freedom to do laundry and dishes before Joanna wakes.

On a typical day: I nurse Susan on both sides right before bed, one side right after waking, then pump the other side. Joey wakes up, we hang out, then Susie wakes. She wants to be held, fed, and held again. If she were first born, I'd be down with the demands. But she's not. So I hold her, put her down, she screams, I pick her up again, try to parent Joanna with one hand, fail, put Susie back down, she screams, I make a bottle, give Joanna my phone so she can play Endless Alphabet, try to feed Susie, clean up spit up, bounce, rock, burp, change, beg her to stop crying, then give up and start nursing. This sequence happens at least 4 times each day.

In these screaming moments, whether coming from Susie or from inside my brain, I have to remind myself that nursing is beneficial for my baby and myself.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152823282483000754.post-58030233626231446822014-02-09T19:36:00.000-05:002017-01-19T22:53:51.716-05:00Nuby Review and Giveaway: Teething Bunny

Susie the sweet 9 week old is a charmer. She coos, sings, eats, cries, and eats. We've noticed that responds much more to toys than Joanna did at this age. She loves things that rattle, jingle, and crinkle. She especially loves her new teething bunny from Nuby.

The main body is crinkly while the feet will be very useful when she begins teething. The ears and arms are easy for her to grab, too. For some strange reason, the crinkly sound puts her to sleep!! It's amazing! This little critter isn't machine washable but you can just spot clean it if need be. It wipes clean very easily.

Nuby has many excellent teethers available on Buy Baby Direct. And I especially love when Nuby sends me awesome products to review and give away!

My 2 year old drinks water all day. She doesn't like juice, she occasionally likes milk, but she loves having water nearby. In our search for the ultimate sippy cup, we cluttered our cabinet with 8 different varieties: tall, short, fat, skinny, straws, no straws, etc. We've since narrowed it down to 3 kinds: Hello Kitty, Dora, and orange. We realized that it didn't really matter what the design was for the cup - it was all about the look. Her Dora cup from Nuby is especially desired when she's watching Dora every night on Nick Jr.

The cup itself is fantastic because it comes with a stopper with 3 options: slow, fast, and removed. If your child is ready to be stopper-free, it's easily removable so they can drink it like a normal sippy cup. Those options helped Joanna grow into using it when she was weaning off of bottle feedings. It's also dishwasher safe! They are available through Amazon and Walmart.

On a personal note, I really love that Nuby partnered with Nick Jr. to offer a Dora the Explorer cup. When you raise a child in a racially diverse city like we do, you have the amazing opportunity to teach your child about different cultures. But more importantly, you get to teach them about how similar all people can be. Our next-door neighbor only speaks Spanish. Although there is a language barrier, she dotes on my daughter like she was family. We try to communicate with the few words we know in each other's language, but Joanna understands her body language, inflection, and facial expression - our neighbor is kind, loving, and friendly. Now that we're watching Dora, Joanna gets excited to tell her "Hola!" to her whenever we see her on the porch or on her steps. (She forgets all of the other Spanish words she learns but I'm at least able to translate the basics.)

In general, I tend to shy away from licensed products that aren't toys, but this sippy cup is a favorite of ours. Joanna loves it - and I hope you'll love it, too because Nuby is graciously giving one of my readers the opportunity to win one! To enter, just leave a comment. A winner will be chosen on February 1st.

Good luck!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152823282483000754.post-77341712991671171312013-03-21T16:17:00.002-04:002014-11-14T13:48:41.442-05:00Returning to WorkI got a job! (YAAAAAAY!) I'll be working as a team leader in the HR department of Target. It's an ideal job that is fully benefitted, rotating schedule, fast-paced work environment, a great discount, nice people, and great opportunity for upward mobility.

As I approach my first day of employment, we are in the process of finding a place to live and finding childcare: Do we live in an apartment? Do we find a townhouse? Do we look for someone that watches children in their home? Do we find a childcare facility? Do we want a longer commute and a better home or a convenient location and less square footage? Do we want a yard or a community playground?

The only question that was easy to answer was this: Should I go back to work or stay home with my daughter? Work. I want to work. I love to work. Loving work doesn't take away the love I have for my daughter.

The working mom culture and stay at home mom culture can be at odds with each other in a vicious way. In my perception of (Southern) Christian culture, many young mothers the goal of staying home to raise their children. Personally, I never had dreams of being a stay at home parent - I had dreams of being a leader. I love to train, equip, and empower people. I especially love to do it in a place that offers a salary and full benefits.

When I lived in the South, I had to be very careful in who I spoke to about my desire to work. "I wish I could stay home like you do," or "Being home is such a blessing for your children," and "God has you at home for a reason," were common responses. I also hear(d), "It's the hardest job in the world, but it gets better! Hang in there!" [To be clear, I'm not "quitting" being a stay at home mom because it's hard. I'm choosing to work because I want to.] That brings me to my all-time favorite reason from society of why I should stay home: "It's important to make sacrifices in those early years so children can grow up to pursue their dreams." Do you see the cycle? That means moms should give up 5 to 10 years of their life so their daughters can give up 5 to 10 years of their lives so their daughters can give up... and so on. I stayed home for a year and a half and I'm glad I did. Now I'm glad to have a job and I'm glad I'll be able to send my daughter to day care where she can continue to learn and play with other kids.

I'm thankful to have a choice between the ability to stay home and the ability to work. I am pursuing a career that my daughter can be proud of. I am using my education, experience, and work ethic to make a difference - and I want to be a role model for my children. If my daughter wants to be a stay at home mom, then awesome! If she wants to be a teacher and have the Summers off to spend with her children, then awesome! If she wants to have a 9 to 5 and pick up her children from day care and have them run into her arms and eagerly tell her about their day, then awesome! I want her to have a choice and not feel pressured by society to pursue something because she "should."

So here I am eagerly returning to work, moving out of my parent's home, and beginning our next chapter! The blog will continue, the name "Housebroken Mom" will stick, and the trajectory of our journey will continue to ebb and flow.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152823282483000754.post-61434524635899512232013-03-14T13:53:00.002-04:002013-03-18T15:31:14.506-04:00How to Shop at a Thrift StoreYou wanna pop some tags? Only got $20 in your pocket? I'll show you the way, my friend. I've been thrifting for about 15 years and I still can't get enough. It combines 4 of my favorite hobbies: saving money, reusing / up-cycling, treasure hunting, and having one of a kind pieces that no one else will have.

Tips for Thrifting

Pace Yourself. Thrifting can be like a road trip - keep a full stomach and empty bladder! If you go into the store hungry and irritable, you've already lost. You should plan to spend at least 1 hour in the store so you can really dig and find great bargains.

Location Counts. If you're searching for something in particular, location will determine what you will find. Rich neighborhoods yield higher quality and more current items. Older neighborhoods have fantastic vintage items. Southerners love Vera Bradley, Yankees love leather, young neighborhoods have children's items, etc.

Dress appropriately. Not all thrift stores have a dressing room, and the thrift stores that do have dressing rooms are usually packed with other people. With that in mind, it's easiest to wear slim fitting pants, a slim fitting top, and slip-on shoes so you can try things on over your clothes.

Know your brands. You may be surprised how many high-quality brands end up on the racks of a thrift store. There's also a better chance of re-selling the item later if its a recognizable brand. I bought an Oilily dress for Joanna for $.75 at Goodwill. She wore it about 6 times before outgrowing it. Because of the brand, I was able to sell the dress on eBay for $12! Here are two more examples:

Gap Tunic Dress
Bought for $4.00 / Sold for $64.00

(Be careful - selling on eBay can be very hit and miss. Major brands and professional sports team apparel are more likely to sell, but there are no guarantees.)

Discount Days. Some locations offer discount days. Our local Salvation Army takes 25% off every Wednesday. The DAV has $5 bag days where you pay only $5 for whatever you can shove into a bag. Call ahead to see what kind of discount your local thrift store offers.

Go with your gut. If something catches your attention, check it out! If it's fabulous but too big, it can be altered. If it's gorgeous and too small, you could use it as something else. A skirt, apron, scarf, etc. Check out New Dress A Day for some incredible before and after photos. The things she comes up with range from simple to genius.

Most things can be fixed with some TLC. If you can patch a hole or create a hem, you can turn many things into a functional piece of clothing. If something has a stain that doesn't come out, you can dye it to a new color.

Have fun! Thrifting is best enjoyed as an adventure with others. If you can, try to go with others that aren't your size. You may find yourself fighting over bargains. Especially shoes.

"I'll wear your granddad's clothes. I'll look incredible.
When Joanna was still car-seat bound, it was pretty easy to get her in and out of a restaurant with relatively little stress. When she started sitting in a high chair, we could keep her entertained with cheerios. Now that she's a strong, independent woman, keeping her entertained and happy requires a bit of creativity.

And with that said, I now say thank you, Nuby. I am excited to talk about Nuby's Mealtime Travel Set. It includes 4 forks, 4 spoons, and a spiffy carrying case. Joanna loves playing with spoons, rattles, and boxes - this combines all 3. It's dish washer safe (top rack), fits easily in the diaper bag, and looks kind of like a popsicle. Win win win. This set is available for $6 on Buy Baby Direct.

The forks are the perfect size and the prongs can actually pick up food. Joanna still prefers her hands, but its a start.

And check out that bowl and plate! I'm also very excited to present Nuby's feeding bowl and rectangular plate. The bowl is genius: it is asymmetrical so one side is slightly higher than the other. It keeps more macaroni and spaghetti inside the bowl by having a higher edge on one side. The plate is equally as genius - it's SQUARE! I know it may not seem like a big deal, but it absolutely is. All of our plates are round, so the spaghetti splatter zone is larger. The square plate doesn't cut the corners (budum ching) so it's less mess. They are also top rack safe, adorable, and durable.

So what's better than a giveaway? TWO giveaways! This week you have twice as many chances to win a great product from Nuby!
